Thank you for your recommendations.
I like meeting people in person, in the physical world. Just like our meeting last night at the Dojo.
Dear Ari,
I'm happy to see more aerophiles at the dojo.
Thank you for your encouragement and your interest in my R/C project.
It occurs to me that your Blade CX2 helicopter is compatible with my experimental transmitter. I wonder if you may wish to try flying your model with my TX.
I think it's bloody brilliant! I will forward it.
Thank you for your support.
I very much like Ari's [tribe] meeting for several reasons. The people at the meeting, including Ari are so insightful and cool it would be fun just have sandwich with them. I've attended two meetings so far and have been surprised about the level of sophistication of the tools he uses to produce insight and discussion. These type of gatherings usually cost big bucks.
I personally have started the process to my life vision... although Ari might not call it that. I also have gained clarity during a frustrating period about why it was so daunting for me.
Thank you for being part of the Tribe--and for sharing your experience.
What I might call something may be less important than how you experience it.
That is a very nice little demo
Thank you for your encouragement.
I'd like to beta test your iPhone R/C controller.
Thank you for your interest in beta-testing iPhly.
This app requires connecting your iPhone or iPod to an RF module or a "buddy box" connection on an R/C transmitter. In most cases this requires soldering up an adapter circuit. I wonder if you are comfortable with soldering, and if you agree that you connect these devices together at your own risk. If you do, please describe the R/C hardware you plan to use in your testing.
This application is experimental software. I wonder if you agree that if you fly R/C models using this application, you take responsibility for any damage that may arise from losing control of you model in flight. If you do, please describe the model you plan to use in your testing.
Lastly, the Apple process for distributing beta-testing software requires that I issue you a "provisioning profile" which iTunes uses to install my app on your device. To generate that, I need your decide ID. You can obtain this ID by following these instructions from Apple.
Hi,
I saw your video of the iPhone control of a Vapor. I've got both an iPhone and a Vapor, so if you get the Apple store to release that product you can be sure I'll be a customer! :)
In a related note, I'm trying to set up a computer controlled RC boat for a class at [Name] College of Engineering (I start teaching as an Associate Professor in the fall). We've got a vision system looking at LEDs on the boat. Now I need the computer to command the boat to move in response to the vision data. I'd love to be able to use a DSM 2 transmitter talking to a DSM2 receiver.
Could you tell me how you figured out the inputs to the DSM2 transmitter module? I had planned to use a full Spektrum radio and tap into the trainer port, but if I could just use a transmitter module that would far better!
Any help would be much appreciated.
Sincerely,
Thank you for your encouragement.
If you don't want to wait until Apple approves my application, you may wish to sign up as a beta tester.
The module understands the same PPM signal as the trainer port, so you can drive either a full radio or a module with the same program.
Congratulations on your new teaching job.
Hi Ari,
How are you?
You have an impressive project.
I would like to be a beta tester.
How can I help?
I am based in [country].Thanks and look forward to hear from you.
Thank you for your interest in beta-testing iPhly.

Wow what a great idea for iPhone controlled spektrum radio.... Can I beta test? :) I've got lots of spectrum stuff.... Msr, mc, vapor, sukohi and more.... Lots of trucks etc as well on spektrum. I also have lots of bigger helis and planks, but i dont think those are flyable with this sort of system. I also have an iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Are you looking to sell hardware as well? Or does it use standard module only? Because I have contacts in rc manufacturers if you are interested..... I think they will be interested in your stuff, I've been wanting a system like this for a long time. Anyway my name is [Name], better known as [handle], the guy making little robots and steam powered contraptions. I can really put some creative spin to this, and help you get a lot of traffic :)
Again great job! And congrats on the make blog post.... Well deserved.
Thank you for your encouragement. Most people who build "robots" try to make them autonomous. I like how your designs come alive when a human operates them, not a computer program.
I am glad to have you as a beta tester. All the help you are offering--I can use it. I need graphics for the app, and I am looking for manufacturing partners. I want to see a steam "contraption" run with an iPhone!
I gather that you are local--I live in Sunnyvale. Perhaps we can meet in person.
Hi Ari,
Thanks for your reply.
I am comfortable with soldering and I can always get some help if it is out of my skillset.
However, I don't have any RC gear but I am more interested in your helicopter demo.
I understand that it will absolutely on my own risk when I am test driving your software.
Can you recommend me the RC helicopter that I should get to do the test?
Besides, what other hardware do I need in order to setup the beta test?
I'll go ahead to apply for the provisioning profile.
BTW, I only get a jailbreak iphone, will it be ok?
Thanks for your advice.
I don't, generally, tell people what they should do. I sometimes share my experience with people. The helicopter I'm flying in the video is the Blade mCX. I am using the Spektrum transmitter module for Futaba radios.
The rest of the hardware is mostly interconnects. I am putting together a schematic which I can mail to you together with the application archive once I have your phone's ID. You don't need to apply for a provisioning profile--if you send me your phone's ID, I get a profile from Apple for it. You have to be in the iPhone Developer Program (and pay Apple $100 per year) to get your own provisioning profile.
I have no experience with jailbreaking iPhones. I expect that jailbreaking doesn't interfere with my application. If you test iPhly on a jailbroken phone, I can post your results here.
Hi Ari,
Thanks for your info.
I'll go ahead to buy these parts and start working on it.
Please send me the connection diagram.
Thanks and will keep you posted.
I'm attaching the connection diagram and a couple of photos that show the complete device. This particular module style has ground and V+ connections on symmetrical pins (2 & 4) which means it's possible to connect it in reverse and burn it. I encourage you to verify which pin goes to ground and and which goes to V+ before you plug it in.
The module's 5-pin connector uses unusually long pins--you need at least 15mm; 18mm is an even closer fit.

I would like to become one of your beta testers for your iPhone apps. I have the latest version iPhone (as well as an older version) and several of the same helicopters shown in the video.
I have designed helicopters and am a RC heli pilot. See one of the helicopters that I designed here: [URL]

Thank you for your interest in testing my application.
I am glad to have feedback from someone with as much experience as you. I notice that you have a 650 area code. I wonder if we might meet in person so as to shorten the feedback loop.
To install the app on your phones, Apple requires that I create "provisioning profiles" for them--for that I need your phones' IDs. You can follow the instructions here to find them.
Ari
Here is the ifo about my iPhone;
IMEI [XX XXXXXX XXXXXX X]
ICCID [XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX]

Can we meet at the place where you have your office?
Thank you for your phone call.
I am looking forward to meeting you at the Hacker Dojo. The address is 140A South Whisman Rd Mountain View, CA 94041.
I am issuing provisioning profiles and I'm noticing that I don't have your phone's UUID. You can follow the instructions here to find it. It's a 40-digit hex number.
Very cool. Your handiwork is pretty amazing.
Thank you for your encouragement.
Hi,
I'm a coder/maker who's been playing with the iphone sdk for some time now and is recently developing an interest for r/c and drones. I've seen the video of your iphone r/c controller and read that you're looking for beta testers so I thought I'd send an email and ask more info.

Hey [handle] here... commented on your vid :D... i was wondering what the beta tester would be able to do exactly? Do we buy our own module and obtain the app then try it out ourselves at home?
Or do we have to go over to where you are and try it out there?
Thank you for your support and for your comment on YouTube.
If you wish to beta-test with my hardware, you can visit me at the Hacker Dojo in Mountain View, Calif. I value face-to-face communication and the short feedback loops that it entrains.
If you wish to build your own hardware, you can follow instructions that appear at Beta Testing link above.
Hello Ari -
I just read about iPhly at TUAW. I would love to have the opportunity to beta test your app if the offer is out there. I work with a very qualified pilot and we fly an easystar custom twin boom plane that be has developed. We have numerous iPhones, the iPad and access to various planes and transmitters. My pilot is a qualified jet aircraft mechanic and a really great R/C pilot. Please let me know if we can help in any way.
Thank you and Good Luck!
Thank you for your offer of help and the photo of your kit-bashing Twin Star. I wonder if this configuration is as stable as the original.

Hello,
[Name] here, I just watched your video and was wondering if you were still looking for beta testers for the iPhone 2.4g rc app?
I own a couple iPhones and would like to give it a try, let me know a bit more info on it, or what I would need to beta test it.
also would you mind, if we did beta test it, putting up a video of our own on our YouTube channel the [channel name]. We are a part of the [group] a small group of guys shareing our rc discoveries, designs, and anything else rc related we run across. this would be a good one to put on our channel.
please check out the [name] channel as well as the [other name] channels.
do you think this would work with any 2.4g plug in module or only with the Spektrum?
Thank you for your support.
I welcome beta testers. Instructions now appear at Beta Testing link above.
The design works with any RF module that understands PPM. If you test it with another module, I can post your results on my page.
If you have feedback on how iPhly works, I ask that you share it with me first, but otherwise when you shoot your own video, it is up to you what you do with it.
I would like to volunteer to be a beta tester as I have a lot of equipment and time as I am retired. I have worked a lot on the ArduPilot and ArduIMU projects.
Thank you for your support.
Instructions for beta testers now appear at Beta Testing link above.
Thank you for stating your experience. iPhly and ArduPilot address different dimensions of model flight. ArduPilot seeks to build intelligence into the vehicle; iPhly intends to give human operators new tools for intelligent control. Thank you for bringing your unique perspective to this project.
hi ari- saw your iphly demo on the tuaw blog and youtube. your video says you are looking for beta testers.
i am interested! i have a eflite CX2 helicopter(the big brother to the MCX in your video), and an iphone 3GS.
at any rate, i'd love to give your setup a try, if you're not already deluged with similar offers.
Thank you for your support.
Instructions for beta testers now appear at Beta Testing link above.
CX2 is not as stable as mCX--or at least it's easier to get its rotors out of balance and make it less stable. I am curious how easy it is to fly it with this system.
I wonder about the feelings you may have around $BEING_LATE.
I am interested in beta testing iPhly...
I currently own the same vehicles I see in the video (Blade and the Vapor). I also have the Micro J3 Cub, Micro P51, and the DSM2 parkzone super cub.
Thank you for your support.

Hi Ari,
I'd love to sign up as a beta tester. How should I do this?
Also, where can I learn more about the PPM signal? I have some knowledge of the old-style PPM FM signals people used to do, where there is a fame with a set of PPM frame outputs (see attached). Is it still the same as this?

Thank you for your support.
Instructions for beta testers now appear at Beta Testing link above.
The image you attach explains Pulse Position Modulation as well as any description I know. It's still the same signal that is in use since the late 1960s. PPM predates wide use of FM in R/C. Original implementation is On-Off keying: the radio transmits carrier during pulses and is silent otherwise, similar to Morse code transmission where the radio transmits only during dits and dahs.
I wonder if you know the source of your image so I may attribute it accurately.
Hi,
I still don't have either the iPhone, neither the heli(except my broken Lama) - but I am enthusiastic to test. Next week the salary coming, so ... there is a good thing to spend it on
Please tell me what is needed?
I am based in [Country].
Thank you for sharing your enthusiasm.
Instructions for beta testers now appear at Beta Testing link above.
I am not clear on your question about needs. If you clarify what you intend to achieve, the path to it may become apparent. Alternatively, you may look at where your path is leading you, and deduce your intention from your results.
If your path is spending every last penny on experimental technology, your result may be that you do not satisfy your more basic needs.
Good Morning
I see the youtube VIDEO the new system for controlled the Helicopter ad Airplane with DSM Mode and Iphone.

Hi Ari – very impressive use of accelerometers to perform remote control! (I saw the video on DIYDrones.com)
I am interested in helping to Beta test your application:
I have an iPodTouch (which I believe should work as you are not using any of the phone (GSM) capabilities of the iPhone).
I have a Blade mSR helicopter.
I do not have a Spektrum transmitter module, but I do have a DX5e transmitter, do you know if the 'audio' output from your application would drive this via the trainer port – is the PPM signal compatible?
Please let me know if I can help, I'm experienced with software and electronics hardware and used to Beta testing.
Regards
Thank you for your support.
Instructions for beta testers now appear at Beta Testing link above.
I expect that iPod touch works in this application. If you can confirm this, I can post your results on my site.
The PPM iPhly generates can drive the trainer port on a DX5e. What's more, this radio uses the same 3.5mm audio jack as the iPhone and iPod, so all you need to connect them is a standard stereo cable. The application lacks one feature that is important in this scenario--the ability to reorder channels. The ordering it uses now is Futaba's aileron, elevator, throttle, rudder. JR and Spektrum radio put throttle first. You can test that the signal gets through, but not really fly this way. I am working on adding this feature.
I have no experience flying an mSR with either a conventional transmitter or iPhly. I gather it's significantly more maneuverable than the mCX. I am curious how difficult it may be to iPhly.
Hi, I saw your video about controling a RC aircraft with the iphone. I fly RC aircraft and own an iphone. My brother flies RC helos and he owns an iphone as well.

I do not know how to send a regular email to you, so I am sending you the message [through YouTube's Personal Messages]. You can contact me back at [email address].
I am wondering if this might work with a SoarStar park flier airplane? It is just a beginner R/C plane with a regular remote. I don't know a whole lot about it because, honestly, I have been a little afraid to try it so far and it has been quite windy lately. I do have it though and would love to be able to control it via the iPhone. The remote that came with it when I got it is kind of big and feels a little uncomfortable. Just was wondering if you might know if it would work or not. Thanks. :)
Thank you for your support.
Trevor Blackwell, the inventor of an electric unicycle, shares this wisdom:
You don't want to be learning how to control such a vehicle at the same time as debugging it, so you really need to learn to ride a regular unicycle first."

There is another type of help I'm looking for from local pilots. I am looking for a standby pilot to hold the trainer switch on a conventional transmitter while I'm iPhlying a larger model through the buddy cord. I want to make sure the other pilot can take over if my test-flight gets in trouble.
Hi,
I saw your video of the remote control of RC helicopter via iPhone. It's pretty cool.
I would be interested in participating in the Beta program. What will that entail?

Yes, put my pictures on your website.
Add a comment that this unit with a built in PC board will be available to your beta testers at a discount. Have them contact me directly at colby.chuck@gmail.com (you can put my email on you website)
How many people are you signing up as beta testers?
Chuck
PS what is the size of the transmitter module?
Does the antenna come with it?
I ordered one but it will a few days before I receive it.
Thank you for providing this service.
You can track the number of beta testers right here on golB as they sign up and share their feedback.
The module is 38mm x 59mm x 21mm. It comes with a large antenna housing that fits full-size transmitters. I use a smaller antenna from a cheap WiFi router. The actual antenna is the same length, but the housing I use is more compact.
Here's my iPhone 3gs identifier code:
[XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX]
I also have a 3g I could use for the testing, so if you're interested I can send you also its code.
For the hardware: I read you're making engineering builds available to beta testers, so you'll prabably need my mail address:
[Snail-mail address]My pilot skills are beginner level.
Thank you for the data.
I am emailing you the beta app. "Engineering build" refers to software that I build for engineering testing purposes. This is in contrast with "release builds" which ship to end users.
I have no plans to mail physical objects to beta testers.
If you wish to buy the hardware instead of making it yourself, you may wish to contact Chuck Colby above.
Ari,
My son, [Name], has been pulling things apart for many of his 13 years. The kitchen table now holds his latest victim, a 35mm camera, that he'd like the flash for to light up his glow-in-the-dark air-soft BBs. He's had every sort of remote control or model toy including the latest, his E-Flite Blade. He has participated in VEX Robotics this year, freshman year, in high school.
[My son] has had his E-Flite Blade since last fall. We fly it indoors in a hall that is about 40' x 50' x 14' high. We have replaced the landing skid once and rotor head linkage set twice. The body has seen better days but still original.
[My son] and I would enjoy being beta testers. [His] iPhone is my first generation phone without service (he uses it like an iPod touch; it is jailbroken - out of necessity).

Tx Radio module
mCX heli or Vapor planeCome back with my iPhone ID, when I have it (hope soon).
Best wishes and good luck with development,
Thank you for your encouragement.

Hi Ari,
I read the link on Make about your iPhone app. I own two tiny Helicopters and RC controlled Slope Gliders and would love to Beta test if your software will work on a iPod Touch or iPad.
Hope to see you again at the Makers Faire.
Good Luck and Cheers,
I am glad to hear form you again.

My intention is for iPhly to work on iPod touch as well as on the iPhone. If you test it on a Touch, I can post your findings on my website. I am not clear on how useful iPhly may be on a larger device like the iPad.
I want to attend Maker Faire as a visitor, rather than an exhibitor, this year. I notice that when I have an exhibit of my own, I miss a lot of the other exhibits at the show.

Thank you for the reply, I was just reading tuaw and saw their feature at work, so I sent along my interest from the easiest email address to access, my work addy. I work for Apple retail in [City].
If you'd prefer, I have a personal email. [xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx@xx.xxx]
As soon as I'm off my shift, I'm looking into it. Seems really interesting.
Thank you for your clarification and your encouragement.
I have no preference as to the address you use to communicate with me, as long as I'm clear on whether the communication is from a private individual or an official representative of a company.
Can we use an iPod Touch and not have to worry about an incoming phone call ?
Yes. iPod Touch is pretty much an iPhone that is permanently in airplane mode.
Hi Ari,
That's great material! I'm very interested in being a Beta-tester. My UDID is [XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX]
I'm traveling and when I google-searched for that source again I couldn't find it. I bookmarked it at home though, so I can search for it when I get back.
Meanwhile, this web site also does a nice job of describing what's going on:

Sincerely,
Thank you for the link.
I am emailing you the beta app.

GoodMornig I not have reiceve the app for install on iphone, i have building the interface but i not understand whot is 2X2 on the setup
Thanks
Thank you for your patience. The response to my video overwhelms my capacity for communication. I am still catching up on email after the TUAW blog post. The video generates over 20,000 views in 10 days.
I am emaling you the beta app.
"X2" is the
audio connector. "2" "3" and "1" are its different terminals--tip,
ring and sleeve, respectively. I connect sleeve to ground, ring to
the PPM input of the RF module and the resistor. I do not use the
tip.
Ari,
I understand the limitations of the current version from your Beta testing page and look forward to helping to test out the new features and defect resolutions as you develop them.
I hope that this is the information you need to enable us to help with the testing:
Device: iPod Touch 8Gb
Device ID: [XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX]

Thank you for your support--and for stating your expectations.
I am emailing you the beta build.

Hi,
I'm a fellow developer/tinkerer/RC hobbyist that would love to test iPhly!
I guess it is this module that you are using, even though the antenna connector has moved? Do you know if one can use a Spektrum DX7 transmitter by connecting the iPhone to the trainer input? I have no idea is futaba outputs PPM or PCM nor if the channel assignments are the same.
Will you release the source, at least the pulse generating functionality?
Thanks,
Thank you for your support. Instructions for beta-testers appear at Beta Testing link above.
The module you link to is the module I'm using. It understands regular PPM. One of my associates has a DX5e that works with iPhly--all we need for it is a stereo cable to connect the phone and the TX. I expect that the DX7 uses a very similar circuit. If you try it with DX7, I can post your findings on my website.
Successful open source projects have a strong developer community behind them. I see strong user interest in my project so far. I am looking to see what kind of developer interest it generates.
I wonder what you plan to do with the source if I release it.
Hello
thanks for send me the software, but i have a problem my iphone is 3.1.2 the your software ask the 3.1.3,
if you possible play the software with firmware 3.1.2?
i not update my phone why.........
Thanks
Thank you for your feedback.
Your requests shape the project and make it useful to a broader audience.
I am emailing you a build for iPhone OS 3.1.2
Ari,
We're having a lot of fun with R/C Flyers up here, including all kinds of mods. I'd be interested in testing your iPhly app if you still need beta testers.
Thank you for your note.
I wonder if by "up here" you mean the organization in your "From:" address.
Instructions for beta testers appear at Beta Testing link above.
Ari, did you get my ID code ?
Thank you for your patience. The response to my video overwhelms my capacity for communication. I am still catching up on email after the TUAW post.
I'm emaling you the beta build.
Hi Ari,
Thanks for your detailed description.
I asked my friend and he said that there should be no problem.
However, he think that we will need more parts, e.g. some connectors and also the 2.4G antenna.
Please advise.
Seems like they have the module and the helicopter on sale but joining the apple developer program is quite expensive.
Do you know if there is a way to cut down the cost?
Thanks for your time.
Thank you for sharing your concerns.
My implementation uses one 5-pin header to connect the RF the module, one stereo (TRS) plug to connect to the iPhone, and one plug for the battery. The antenna I use is from a cheap WiFi router. The antenna that ships with the Spektrum module works equally well but is larger. Photos of my device appear at the beta testing page.
You do not need to join the Apple developer program to beta-test software. If you send me the ID of your phone, I generate the provisioning profile for you. You only need to pay Apple if you wish to deploy your own software.
You can follow Apple's instructions to obtain your phone's UDID.
Hello
thanks for the software,
i have the problem, i coming the test with SPEKTRUM SM 1000 2ch for the car, when power on the trasmitter the led light bat not stop, do you have testing with this module SPEKTRUM 2ch ?
Thank you for sharing your test results.
T gather that the software installs an runs on your phone and that you have the hardware ready. I wonder if you can verify that your setup works with DM8.
I am not clear on the observations you make about the LED. In my testing with DM8 (the air module) the LED blinks and then turns solid orange when the module detects valid PPM. When the module does not detect PPM, the LED blinks once and goes out. I do not have an SM1000 module to test with.
The current beta version of iPhly sends out 4-channel PPM signal. I wonder if your module requires a 2- or 3-channel signal and refuses to work with higher number of channels. If you have a radio that does work with SM1000, perhaps you can send me a picture of what its PPM looks like on an oscilloscope.
Hi Ari,
Thanks for your reply.
My jailbreak phone id is:
[XXXXXXXXXXX]
Is it ok?
Thanks and regards,
UDID is a 40-digit hex number. You can find it following instructions in my previous replies.
Jailbreaking allows one to circumvent Apple's process for installing third-party applications, and makes provisioning and UDIDs irrelevant.
I wonder about the feelings you may have around $AUTHORITY.
Some people can be in jail and still be free.
Others can break out and still be in jail.
Ari,
Thank you for the FlyByTouch app.
We're trying to follow your hardware set-up. We've ordered the DSM2 module and we've found the 1599BBKBAT (130mm x 65mm x 25mm) enclosure on-line. What board(s) do we need to put into the enclosure to tie together the battery, audio jack and DSM2?
Thanks for your help.
[Father] (& [Son])
Thank you for sharing your progress.
The enclosure I use has no special significance beyond being in my parts box on the day I build the prototype. You can use any other enclosure that fits the module. I use copper-clad perfboard that I cut to size. Radio Shack carries perfboards in various sizes. Some of their boards have matching enclosures.
Thank you for pointing out the name mismatch. FlyByTouch is one of the development names I use before I settle on iPhly. I change it in the next build.
Ari,
This will be the first year since 2005 that I will just be a visitor myself. I did miss most of the Faires offerings by being in the Make Play Day.
Perhaps we will bump into each other?
For the Beta testing, I will have to make the time to do the construction and I will let you know as soon as I do.
There is an " Open Make " today at the Exploratorium I will attend, and find out if I will be asked to contribute anything to the 2k10 Bay Area Maker Faire.
Thank you,
Cheers,
Thank you for your note.
I notice a lot of future tense in your email.
I hold that past and future exist only as concepts in the moment of now. Time is different from space in this respect. If we decide to meet at the Faire and you show up in San Mateo and I simultaneously show up in San Francisco, I know how to call you in San Mateo to clear up the confusion and how to translate myself to San Mateo and meet you. If we decide to meet at Maker Faire, and you show up in San Mateo May 23, and I show up in San Mateo on the 22, I don't know how to communicate with you in the future or how to translate myself there.
I only know how to bump into people--and build things--in the moment of now.
Ari, This is what the iPhone is going to fly !!
One prop will lift it off the ground.

Thank for all information,
ask you if possible building a version the iPhly send 2ch, I will try to drive an electric car, so I only use 2 channels.
Thanks very much for the avaibility
Thanks
I am emailing you a 2-channel version. This is just a quick hack to see if it works with your module. In this version tilt controls both throttle and steering. I have no experience with R/C cars. I wonder which input feels more natural for throttle--touch or tilt.
Accelerator pedals and pistol-grip transmitters have springs that return the throttle to 0 when driver lets go. This is consistent with continuously varying the speed of a car. Airplane throttles have no springs and stay where the pilot puts them. This is consistent with flying at a constant speed for extended periods.
I wonder how these conventions map to input methods that the iPhone offers.
Dear Ari,
My apologies for being vague in my quick note. By "up here" I actually mean The [Name] Corporation; the not-for-profit company that employs me. I also mean [City, State] where I work. It is one of our primary campuses (the second is much closer to [City]). We're currently working on building DIY drones which fly via waypoint using the Arduino system published by Chris Anderson. Someone who works near me is also driving a Packbot from iRobot with a custom iPhone interface he's developed.
Thanks for the instructions - I look forward to trying it. Who knows, maybe we'll end up porting a Droid version!
Thank you for sharing your process.
It sounds like you enjoy your job and the toys you get to play with. I have fond memories of flying out of Hanscom in 2002-2003.
I wonder about your interest in porting to Droid.

Hello Ari,
I saw your video about controlling a model airplane via an iPhone. As you're looking for beta testers, I'd like to propose myself as one. I am interested in airplane models and I am following any news about parot actually. You airplane seems to work great and I'd like trying it and helping you out to get a final model.
I have a blog about high tech and video games, so I am in touch with a large public and follow all high tech news.
Hoping you'll choose me as a beta tester (I live in [Country]).
Thank you in advance,
Yours,
Thank you for your support.

I will be a beta tester. I got a iphone 3gs and also now ipad 32GB love to help out. But I am in [City, Country] but lets see what we can do to work it out okay.
Thank you for your support. I like your certainty about your future.
I do not discriminate on grounds of location.

I have no plans to mail physical objects to beta testers.I kind of imagined that sending out hardware to beta testers wasn't a viable solution :)
Thanks for the beta!
Not unless it costs money. You may wish to contact Chuck Colby who advertises his version of the hardware.
Hello,
I visited your website and I'm very interested in your products (airplanes in bottle).
Do you sell them? What would be the price for one piece?
Can I order a special airplane model to be placed in the bottle?
Thank you very much and again: Great ideas!
Have a nice day,
Thank you for your encouragement.
I occasionally build custom models on commission. If you send me a description of the model you want and the bottle size you are looking for, I can give you a quote. My prices start at 1/2 oz of gold for a basic model--about $580 in today's dollars.
Dear Ari,
It was fascinating talking to you the other day about your tribe. I am very interested in attending... (and at the moment feeling rather nervous about it.)
I don't remember exactly what you asked me to share... I think it may have been about what issues I want to address. An underlying issue that I have been dealing with is that I seem not to be able to claim my own happiness. It feels almost dangerous to pursue a happiness that hasn't been somehow "okayed" by someone else. It seems to be played out in my life in my relationship and finance/work areas... as well as creative.... ah heck, probably almost every area of my life!
Let me know if there is something else you would like me to address before coming to the group.
Cheers,
Thank you for sharing your process.
Nervousness, fear and feeling of danger all have the same positive intention: risk control. I wonder who needs to "okay" your happiness and what happens if you defy him or her.
You may wish to write down a snapshot of how you wish your issue to turn out when you resolve it.
Risk control... yes, indeed!
I am still interested in the group. I had the feeling there was something you wanted me to do before inviting me to a meeting. Have I done it? Or is there something else?
I don't remember if you gave me an address, or just told me it was in an office... so I would need the time and place too. (I do remember it was tomorrow evening in Los Altos...)
I welcome you to the tribe.
I also ask you to write down a snapshot of how you wish your issue (unable to claim happiness) to turn out when you resolve it. I want you to write in the present tense and in the positive. By way of example, someone whose issue is "I'm lonely" might write, "My girlfriend and I live together. We meet friends regularly... etc." or however he may wish his issue to turn out.
I am emailing you the address. We start at 7.
Hello
Are you still looking for beta testers?
I have a jailbroken iPhone 3gs DX7
lots of planes and an rc car I'd like to try out and report back to you

Flew out of Hanscom?: A person of distinction, I see you are! I love my work, including the toys, but more importantly I am using our internal research program to bring the open source hardware movement into focus for our company and our customers. I work in [code], the Open Services department, and have an active interest in open source and open data. Thus, my interest in porting to android. Also, I have a Droid and love it despite the warts. A close second for favorite Android devices is the TouchBook from AlwaysInnovating with a detachable monitor: http://www.alwaysinnovating.com/home/index.htm.
What else do you do?
Thank you for sharing your interest in open source [hardware|software|data] and inspiring others.
DoD stops publishing DAFIF in 2006. Until then, and
while the data are in the public domain, I work on rewriting the
file in XML and generating SVG graphics from it. My paper from SVG
Open 2004 about this is
still online.
You can read about some of the other things I do right here on this site.
Hello Ari,
I'm [First Last] a [country] aeromodeller.
I work for the [country] magazine [Name] where I see your video about Iphone piloting. I test some months ago the AR drone from Parrots (the barber man, it's me).
My speciality is micro models and viedo equipment for airplane and work a time for international MUAV contest (see some reporst abouts this on my website)
I'm very interesting to test your solution for Iphone. I have models like yours with Spektrum equipment.
Could you say to me what sort of beta testeur you need ?
Regards
Thank you for your support.
A man of your experience can help define iPhly's features and make it useful to a broader audience. I welcome your feedback.
The beta testing link above lists the specific questions I have for beta testers, as well as requirements for them.
Dear Ari,
Here is my Device ID [xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx]
I agree to take full responsibility for my actions, crash and burn or otherwise. :-)
I'm a fairly new R/C Pilot but I'm getting the hang of it fairly quickly.
My models only need repair once every couple week's and then it's just minor adjustments to keep them balanced.
thanks in advance.
Hi Ari.
I'm wondering if you have another provisioning profile available. My brother has a iPod touch that he'd like to use for beta testing. He's a bit more into R/C planes than I am and I'm a bit more into Mac's. here's his ID [xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx]
thanks in advance
I am emailing you a profile for your brother's iPod.

Hello, my name is [Name] and I'm [Nationality] 27 years and a pilot model for 10 years. I want to be a beta tester for iphly. are comfortable with soldering and integrated circuits, is peliot helicopter aircraft, and I will try to interface with your system and a module haitec optic6 Jeti 2.4 GHz, with an Ipod touch. My udid is: [xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] and my email is: [email]
Thank you for your support. Welcome to the beta testing program. I am looking forward to your feedback.
I am not clear on the modules you intend to test with. If you intend to use a 72MHz module in addition to the Jeti 2.4GHz unit, you need to connect an external antenna to the module.
You can also get your device's ID by downloading this FREE APP from the app store Ad Hoc Helper
Thank you for the link
Dear Ari,
I've located all the parts I need to build the connector except for the pins that plug into the module. Are those "wire wrap" style posts?
Sincerely,
Thank you for sharing your process.
The headers I use are regular through-hole pins, the type that R/C servos might plug into. The only difference is they are longer than usual.
Hello,
If you are always has the research for beta tester for your system of piloting RC via the iphone, I am interested.
What look for you in particular?
Very cordially.
